Check Out The New Rules For Major League Baseball This Season

Spring Training is currently underway for the new baseball season.

Everything seems to be going pretty well, but there are some new things to watch for this season.

There is now a pitch clock, bigger bases and no more shift.

The new pitch clock will make the games about an hour shorter.

There will be a 30-second timer between batters. Pitchers will have 15 seconds to begin their pitching motion. This will expand to 20 seconds if there is a runner on base. Batters must be set and ready for the pitch by the time the clock reaches :08. If the batter causes the delay, it will count as a strike. If the pitcher causes a delay, it will count as a ball.

The batter will only be able to call time out once per plate appearance.

TV broadcasts are having a tough time adjusting to the pitch clock. It counts down so fast, there isn't much time to air replays.

The bases are 3 inches bigger.

Bases will now be 18 inches square. The bigger bases have been proven to reduce injuries and collisions. They will also increase the success rate when stealing.

When it comes to picking off a runner, pitchers will be limited to two pickoff attempts per plate appearance. If there is a third unsuccessful attempt, it will be an automatic balk.

The shift is going away.

Remember the last few seasons when fielders would all group together on one side for certain batters? Now, there has to be at least two players on either side of second base and they have to be on the dirt. They won't be able to switch positions unless there is a substitution.

It seems like the players and fans are still getting used to these new additions.

I know I am.

The Astros will begin their regular season at home on March 30th.

GO ASTROS!
