Boston Man Arrested In Connection With Ballot Box Fire

Authorities in Boston arrested a man suspected of lighting a fire inside of a ballot drop-off box early Sunday (October 25) morning. Firefighters were called to the Boston Public Library near Copley Square and found smoke pouring out of the ballot box.

They had to fill the box with water to extinguish the flames.

Later in the day, officers patrolling Copley Square noticed an individual who matched the description of the suspect from surveillance camera footage. He was identified as Worldy Armand, 39, and taken into custody on an active warrant for receiving stolen property. He is expected to be arraigned on charges of willful and malicious burning.

The box was last emptied on Saturday afternoon, and the Boston Elections Department said on Twitter that there were 122 ballots in the box at the time of the fire. They managed to salvage 87 of the ballots, which were able to be processed.

The FBI is assisting with the investigation but did not say if Armand would face additional federal charges.

“Federal authorities are now investigating this matter. For the next several weeks, it is a top priority of our offices to help maintain the integrity of the election process in Massachusetts by aggressively enforcing federal election laws,” U.S. Attorney Andrew E. Lelling and FBI special agent Joseph R. Bonavolonta said in a joint statement.
