Looking for more authentic scares this Halloween season? The Houston area has a ton of reportedly authentic haunted historic sites and destinations.
Visit Houston has a great rundown of places said to be inhabited by ghosts. Here are a few highlights...
- The Rice Hotel, where John F. Kennedy spent his last night before being assassinated, is now the Rice Lofts and residents report seeing ghostly dancers on the rooftop
- Battleship Texas, anchored just off the Houston Ship Channel, has had visitors report inexplicable murmurs and noises, vapors appearing in photos and feelings of apparitions passing by
- Glennwood Cemetery, located off Memorial Drive, is rumored to be haunted by the murdered one-time owner and is a hot spot for local ghost hunters
- La Carafe, a Downtown wine and dive bar, is said to be home to a deceased former bartender named Carl
- The Brewery Tap, another Downtown bar, is home to an outgoing spirit named William
Our friends over at KPRC 2, recently posted a Galveston-specific list of spooky spots.
The Hotel Galvez also appears on the Visit Houston list. The hotel opened in 1911 and has been home to at least a few ghost stories over the years, including one about a heartbroken sailor's sweetheart who hanged herself in room 501. Ashton Villa was one of the first brick residences in the state of Texas. It was used as a hospital for Confederate soldiers during the Civil War. This landmarks ghost stories include the original owner's long-dead daughters appearing, along with reports of Confederate soldiers still patrolling the grounds.
