Large gatherings prompt complaints to officials over virus concerns

Bars and clubs in Texas have been okayed to reopen after COVID-19 lockdowns, but only at 25 percent capacity. Over the Memorial Day weekend, however, some clearly weren't adhering to Gov. Greg Abbott's restrictions.

Houston Fire Chief Sam Pena tweeted that the department had responded to some 300 violation complaints, and Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said the city will close businesses that don’t follow state guidelines.

Video of a Saturday swimming pool party at Clé Houston, a Midtown club, showed a large outdoor crowd gathered with no facemasks, and social distancing mostly disregarded. The club called off an event scheduled for Sunday, posting on Facebook that the cancellation was “due to public health concerns related to the Coronavirus pandemic.”

Turner urged those who attended the pool party and other packed events to visit a drive-thru testing site today as a precaution, noting that some who attended might have been asymptomatic.
