Major retailers are implementing one-way aisles, the latest in a line of traffic-control measures meant to encourage social distancing during the pandemic.
According to CNN Business, Kroger is testing one-way aisles in certain markets and Walmart, Hy-Vee and other chains are making similar moves. The idea behind single-direction shopping lanes is simple: people moving in the same direction will have less contact with each other.
In recent weeks grocery stores and pharmacies have installed plexiglass partitions at checkouts, designated exclusive shopping hours for older and high-risk individuals, installed distancing decals and signage, and started to monitor store traffic, stopping new shoppers from entering when the store hits a reduced capacity limit. Kroger is using a technology called QueVision that uses infrared sensors and predictive analytics to help keep stores at a lower, safer occupancy. Kroger is also encouraging employees to wear store-provided protective masks and gloves and expanding employee temperature checks.
