Service for Slain Student

It was a gloomy Houston day Saturday (1-18-2020). Especially for a commemorative service of Cesar Cortez, the 19 year old Bellaire HIgh School student who was shot and killed in class days before. The ceremony was held at West University Baptist Church. A Memorial Scholarship Fund has been set up in Cortez's honor.

In a related event, students held a protest at Houston Independent School District demanding the Board be more transparent about gun violence. One student told our TV partner Channel 2, "We want accountability from the district. We also want to raise awareness of the issue of gun violence in our schools. We don't want another life to be taken within our school or within our community."

The 16 year old shooter has been charged with manslaughter.
