Houston School Board Should Put New State School Funding Into Teacher, School Staff Pay Raises and Investment in Schools

HOUSTON—All of Houston public schools’ share of the newly approved state education funding should go toward pay raises for teachers and support staff and for investment in schools, teachers, school support personnel, Houston Independent School District trustees, parents and others will demand at a news conference on Monday.

Under HB 3 just signed into law, Houston public schools will receive about $135 million.

“Houston teachers are among the worst-paid educators in the region. This new influx of funding should be the start toward making our compensation competitive,” said Zeph Capo, president of the Houston Federation of Teachers.

“Just like our dedicated teachers, our school support staff deserve a decent pay raise of at least $15 an hour and a 5 percent cost-of-living increase. We will push for this because enough is enough,” said Wretha Thomas, president of the Houston Education Support Personnel.
