First impressions aren't everything, but they certainly hold some weight when it comes to first dates.
More often than not, they've decided whether they want a second date before the first meeting is even over - but exactly how soon is that?
New research has identified the exact time it takes for someone to decide on whether they want a second date - and it might surprise you.
Dating app Inner Circle surveyed 1,006 active daters across the UK to determine exactly how long it takes singletons to decide if they want a round two and they found, on average,it takes 42 minutes and 29 seconds.
To be honest, this came as a pleasant surprise to us. Forty-two minutes suggests people are making their decisions based on personality and not looks alone, which can only be a good thing, right?
It also proves that the first three quarters of an hour are the most important time to make a good impression. So if you make it to 45 minutes in and your date is still laughing at your jokes, you're probably in the clear.
However other daters made their decisions a bit quicker, with 19 per cent admitting they had made their mind up in under ten minutes.
When dating online, it's no unusual for people to match and then spend weeks texting before actually meeting, but CEO and founder of the Inner Circle David Vermeulen thinks this is a bad idea.
He told Bustle: "There's really no point in chatting online for days and weeks on end. You could meet in person and realize you've wasted all that time because the chemistry just isn't there.
"Getting out there and having real-life experiences is the best way to suss out your potential partner and have fun at the same time."
