Abbott wants state's teachers to earn six figures

Gov. Greg Abbott, on a tour of the state, has been talking with educators about paying the best teachers more than $100,000 a year.

The plan is aimed at keeping keep talented teachers on the job.

Abbott says his plan would allow districts to decide who gets the biggest paychecks. It will be up to the legislature to determine how to fund the raises, but Abbott says the money will not come from increased property taxes.

According to the Texas Education Agency, the minimum salary for Texas teachers with no experience is $28,000. In the Houston ISD, teachers start out at just over $50,000 a year and receive pay increases based on their years of experience.

Statewide, teachers with five years of experience average about $33,000. After 10 years, the pay is only around $38,000.
