My first thought when I read this was, "Why does a 5-year old get an allowance?", but I think she's on to something.
My kids are 18, 11, 8 and 7...and none of them understand the value of a dollar. I think Essence has a great idea!

I too use a "real world" technique to teach my kids about money. I call it "continuous disappointment". Here's an example...
My kids already know that Dad is cheap and the answer is probably "no", so I consider that a win!
