With Beauty and the Beast less than a month away and The Lion King in pre-production, Disney is assembling a team for their next animated classic getting the live-action treatment...the 1998 hit Mulan. Their first big hire is director Niki Caro, who broke out with the 2002 drama Whale Rider. Caro will be only the second female director to tackle a big tentpole release for the studio.
Based on a Chinese legend, Mulan tells the story of a young woman who disguises herself as a man, takes her father's place in the army and goes off to war. There's also a lot of singing and a talking dragon sidekick, in the Disney version at least.
