A statue of Marilyn Monroe that sat atop a gezebo on the Hollywood Walk of Fame was stolen on Monday night, which one city official is calling "the great Marilyn caper of 2019."
The statue in question sat atop the Hollywood Gazebo, which celebrates women in film from different cultures. Dolores Del Rio, Dorothy Dandridge, Mae West, and Anna May Wong have statues around the gazebo, while Monroe sat on top.
The theft was reported on Monday night when a witness claimed to see someone climb the structure and saw off the Marilyn Monroe piece.
Councilman Mitch O'Farrell toldNBCLA, "I am calling this the great Marilyn caper of 2019."
O'Farrell added, "It's not okay to come and vandalize public art."
LAPD detectives and a forensics expert investigated the scene on Tuesday morning. They had the help of the Los Angeles Fire Department, who provided a ladder to allow the forensic scientist to get on top of the structure to investigate.
LAPD Detective Douglas Oldfield told NBCLA the expert found "a few prints" and said the LAPD is "going to investigate this to the best of our ability."
