American Legion Auxiliary Unit 490 is asking businesses to allow its members to distribute poppies at their establishments during the Memorial Day Weekend. The Poppy Program encourages poppy recipients to make donations to the auxiliary's veteran outreach programs. The idea for the poppies, made famous in the poem "In Flanders Fields," began in 1921 as a way to honor those who served in World War I. The small fabric flowers are made by veterans and include a small tag explaining that the little flower was often the one bright spot on battle-ravaged fields of Europe.
