Special Meeting on Houston Equal Rights Ordinance

Houston City Council will hold a special committee meeting Friday morning to hear an update on a petition challenge to the mayor's controversial equal rights ordinance.

Council member Oliver Pennington called the meeting to hear from both the city's secretary and city attorney.

“Just to give a forum for the city attorney to talk to city council about what the duties of council are, and also hopefully to receive a status report from the city secretary on what she's done,” Pennington tells KTRH News.

If 17,000 signatures are validated, Pennington says council faces a mid-August deadline to place the issue on November's ballot.

Council may also choose to rescind the ordinance.

“Its unlikely to happen since it passed by an 11-6 vote, but that will be presented as well,” says Pennington.
